World Languages Department

21st Century Core Values and Beliefs

Language and communication are at the heart of human experience. We must educate students who are equipped linguistically and culturally to communicate successfully in a pluralistic society both at home and abroad. This imperative envisions a future in which students will develop and maintain proficiency in English and at least one other world language. In order to accomplish the above, students will:

  • communicate effectively in languages other than English
  • gain knowledge and understanding and perspective of other cultures
  • connect with other disciplines and acquire information relative to world language and culture
  • develop insight into the nature of language and culture
  • participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world
